Which “..pedia” should I use?
Wikipedia versus Encyclopaedia Britannica
There has been a lot of debate lately as to the validity of using Wikipedia as a reference source. Okay – it seems terrific if you want some quick information but after the number of bloopers that have been detected lately in some of their entries, maybe you should be sticking to the accurate alternatives.
If you haven’t got time to go to the library and like to find your information on the net, why not use Encyclopedia Britannica Online? This is one of the eResources you can access free when you become a TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute student. All you need is the password which you can get from your campus library – save the password to your home computer and you won’t have to enter it again.
Finding information is fast and easy – take the tour - Britannica Online Academic Edition. From one location you have access to multiple resources including not just the normal encyclopedia articles but to lots of added extras such as multimedia, related Web sites and magazine articles. You also have access to Merriam-Webster’s pop-up Dictionary and Thesaurus. One of the real pluses for students is that automatic citations appear at the bottom of each article and that is an incredible help when you need to reference your assignment.
